Today we are celebrating the first 12 months of Homes Tasmania.
We are the steward of Tasmania’s housing and homelessness system with the primary purpose of assisting Tasmanians in need and strategically improving Tasmania’s entire housing system.
Many Tasmanians can build better lives because of the assistance they receive from Homes Tasmania and our partners. In the past year, 3 710 households were assisted with private rental, home ownership or social housing. This includes over 1 000 households allocated a home off the Housing Register. This is in addition to the more than 14 000 households already living in social housing.
We are making good progress towards our commitment to deliver 10 000 homes by 2032. We had delivered 2 971 new homes, or almost 30 per cent of the total commitment, at the end of October 2023.
This achievement provided crisis accommodation, social and supported accommodation, private rental, ‘back-yard’ dwellings, lots released for purchase through our land release program and home ownership assistance.
A well-functioning housing system provides options to meet the different circumstances of Tasmanians, whether they are in crisis or have capacity to enter home ownership, which remains a viable option for many. It delivers quality, sustainable homes that meet the different life stages and needs of Tasmania’s changing population. And a well-functioning housing system prioritises medium-density and infill development to make the most of Tasmania’s existing infrastructure and services.
We delivered Tasmania’s first 20-year Tasmanian Housing Strategy with the ambitious vision to end homelessness by delivering a whole-of-system housing response, including an increase in social and affordable housing.
People are at the centre of everything we do, and our role is to deliver housing solutions for Tasmanians and to work towards ending homelessness.
We know the difference that stable, safe, and secure housing can make in people’s lives and we look forward to sharing what we achieve over the next twelve-months, and the years to follow.
Building homes, creating communities.
