Homes Tasmania is providing more appropriate housing for Tasmanians living with a disability with the completion of Glenson Place in Claremont.
Glenson Place is a 14 unit supported accommodation facility for Tasmanians living with severe and persistent mental illness.
Around 30.5 per cent of Tasmanians are living with disability and make up 37.2 per cent of all applicants on the Housing Register.
Supporting the needs of Tasmanians living with a disability is a key priority of the Tasmanian Housing Strategy, with all new social housing dwellings built to meet Liveable Housing Design Guidelines and universal design principles so they can be easily modified to meet the needs of Tasmanians with a disability.
The facility has been built in partnership with Homes Tasmania and the Fairbrother Foundation and meets a critical community need.
The Fairbrother Foundation identified the need for more housing for people living with severe and persistent mental illness and this model is an example of initiative and leadership where the private sector responds to help fill a critical service gap in partnership with government.
The Fairbrother Foundation generously contributed $2 million towards the construction of the facility, with Homes Tasmania contributing the remaining funds to the $10.5 million development.
Designed by Architects Designhaus, Glenson Place was developed with input from people with lived experience to ensure it is fit for purpose.
The facility is managed and staffed by Richmond Futures 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The facility is close to retail, transport and recreational space allowing the residents to engage in services in their area.
This project showcases the innovation and collaboration that can be delivered with private sector investment to deliver a specialist supported housing facility.
It’s also a great example of how Homes Tasmania redevelops ageing stock to deliver new, fit-for-purpose homes for Tasmanians in need.
An additional 24 unit supported accommodation facility in Chigwell delivered in partnership with Richmond Futures is nearing completion with the service to commence early next year.
At the end of October, we had completed 3 978 homes and lots of land as part of our commitment to deliver 10 000 social and affordable homes by 2032 and have more than 707 homes in the pipeline.
