Students from the Podmatrix Pathway Program, Next Gen Trades have worked together to build a cubby house which has been donated to the children’s ward at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
The second intake of 13 students recently graduated from the program, receiving nationally recognised qualifications while learning hands on skills and getting an introduction into the construction and building industry.
The program helps Tasmanians get a start in the construction industry and is a key component of Homes Tasmania’s ModHomes program.
The ModHomes program is one-way Homes Tasmania is delivering more homes for Tasmanians in need.
Modular houses are built in a workshop and delivered to site. They are one of the solutions to delivering more quality homes for Tasmanians, faster.
Grace and Cameron are two of the recent graduates of the program.
“I saw the program advertised on social media, and it was totally left of field, but it’s my year of trying new things, so I came to the information day and was selected to participate in the program,” Grace said.
“Our trainers, Mitch, Zack and Martin have all been happy to guide us and let us take initiative and put our own stamp on things.
“I’m very open to what comes my way, I’m very interested in the construction industry, and the practical skills that I’ve learnt from this course are invaluable.”
Cameron first heard of the program through Business and Employment Southeast Tasmania (BEST), and it was of interest to him as he has been involved in the construction industry over his working life.
“Being the age that I am, I have a lot of experience using tools and working on site, but I wasn’t as up to date with occupational health and safety and having my tickets fully up to date. This course and the skills and tickets it’s given me will assist me to get back to working in the field I want to be in.
“It’s quite a privilege to be part of the cubby build and it’s been a lot of fun working with the younger people on the course. It’s a terrific opportunity for younger people and older people like me. A lot of people my age have the skills and experience we can offer to the industry, so it’s great to now be up to date with my tickets.
“The program has been a wonderful experience, supervisors and trainers from TasTAFE are terrific and I find the work Podmatrix guys do fascinating.”
Homes Tasmania is a proud sponsor of the Next Gen Trades program, delivered by Podmatrix in partnership with Master Builders Association Tasmania, BEST and TasTAFE.
